Can't Buy Me Love

Week fourteen, August 28, 2008
original 8 1/2 x 11",
We went to Anapolis this past weekend; strolled around, ate really well and went sailing. The inspiration for this collage was the million dollar bill i was handed by a street preacher. I knew i had to use it, just not how. Normally my collages are more complex than this one, with more and smaller elements. Sometimes however, less is really more.

Living the Dream

I wonder how much my inner emotional turmoil reflects in my work. Collage, especially an ongoing project like this has the potential to be a deep, wealthy mine. I guess that it is ultimately my bravery, my willingness to explore the depths of my personal diamond mine that will yield the treasure. What ever that might be.

Blind Vision

Week seventeen, September 28, 2008

Recently, perhaps because of the stress of combining a full time job with teaching a class at the local college the initial choice of imagery for the college seems more random. The first image is not one that i go looking for, rather, one that has often been rejected for use in one of the other collages. I, like most other collage artists have a huge library of images i work with. I buy more books to cut up than i do to read. I love finding old art books at second hand stores.

Divine Construction

The ideas, the impulse, the titles of this work come mainly from my visual sources. Often composed of diametrically opposed elements the collages are brought together into a narrative by the title.

There are so many wonderful Madonna and Child out there, most of them with the most peculiar expressions on their faces that i feel as if i could create a whole body of work out of that genre alone. hmmmm.

My Perfect Body

Week twenty-three, November 16, 2008
original 8 1/2 x 11",
We, as a culture are so obsessed with body image; with the attainment of the perfect body, with the definition of perfect foisted on us by the media. We conveniently forget that people come in all sizes, shapes, colors and conditions. There really is no one size fits all. My perfect body is not only the one i wear, but the one i dream.

Constructing the Body Beautiful

I seem to be on a roll here, dealing with body image in the last two weeks. This collage wasn't really meant to be about body image, rather, an homage to Hannah Hoch. The whole light bulb for a head is a pretty direct lift from a collage of hers that i really admire. However, it occurs to me that we are really remaking ourselves into our own ideal image of ourselves, more so than ever through the services of not only modern medicine, but that of technology. In Second Life, you are not only who you say you are, but you get to pick who you are, your gender, your body, the whole nine yards. So, what is real?
